‘Flanders throwing traditions’
Portfolio project for LUCA School of Arts, Bachelor Visual Arts.
One of my favorite assignments during my Visual Design studies was working on Flemish traditions. Coming from Londerzeel in Flemish Brabant, I didn't have to think long about it. From a young age, I was familiar with our annual "kiekenpotenworp" (chicken leg throw). This led me to further explore the origins of Flemish throwing traditions. How did they come into our lives, and why do they continue to gain popularity today?
In this case, I tried to explain our own Londerzeel tradition. During my research, I learned that throwing traditions are widespread in Flanders. As a medium, I chose a collage animation because I had access to a vast collection of historical photos from the local fair association. This treasure trove of information was invaluable for my research and was also reused in the animation. For those interested, the “kiekenpotenworp” takes place during the September fair weekend in Londerzeel.
